Confined Space Entry & Basic Rescue

As described in Part 5 of the Alberta OHS Code, a confined space is an enclosed or partially enclosed area that is not designed for continuous human occupancy. It has restricted entry or exit and may become hazardous to workers. This may be due to its design, construction, location, atmosphere, the type of work performed inside, the materials present, or challenges with first aid and emergency response.

This course focuses on worker safety when entering confined spaces. Participants learn what defines a confined space, how to assess hazards, and how to follow safe entry procedures. The course also introduces basic rescue methods that may be required in an emergency. Additionally, each participant has the opportunity to enter a confined space and complete a simulated rescue of a 165-pound mannequin. After completing a written exam, successful learners receive a certification valid for three years.

Course Outline:

  • Identifying a confined space and assessing hazards
  • Confined space documentation and entry steps
  • Atmosphere testing and hazard control measures
  • Support roles including tending workers and rescue personnel
  • Practical assessment of basic rescue techniques

Notes:

  • Learners will practice confined space entries and rescues using proper techniques and equipment.
  • Participants must bring hard hats, steel-toed boots, gloves, and coveralls.
  • If available, also bring the full-body harness used at your workplace.
